Drug Violence Lands Sonoran City On List Of Border Danger Zones

Unprecedented levels of drug-related violence in Nogales, Sonora, have landed the border city on the U.S. State Department’s “travel alert” list alongside such notoriously dangerous cities as Ciudad Juarez, Tijuana and Nuevo Laredo, reports the Arizona Daily Star. Previous alerts instructed U.S. citizens to take precautions when traveling in all parts of Mexico along the U.S. border region but did not single out any Sonoran city.

The new alert mentions Nogales as one of the cities that “recently experienced public shootouts during daylight hours in shopping centers and other public venues.” It also highlights Route 15 between Nogales and Hermosillo, Sonora, as a road where “criminals have followed and harassed U.S. citizens traveling in their vehicles.” The alert stops short of telling U.S. citizens to avoid traveling in Mexico but urges them to be aware of the increase in violence related to drug cartels. The Sinaloa and Gulf cartels are fighting for control of the Sonoran-Arizona corridor.
