Reports of rape in San Francisco have increased nearly 40 percent over last year, and police are not sure what is behind the increase, reports the San Francisco Chronicle. Through Sept. 7, there have been 130 reported rapes in the city, compared with 94 over the same period last year. Police believe the increase may come in reports of acquaintance rapes, such as date rape.
Acting Deputy Chief John Goldberg believes that outreach by the department with advocacy groups may have spurred the increase in reports. Janelle White of San Francisco Women Against Rape has not seen a dramatic increase in the number of people contacting her organization.
