Nearly 19 years after Jacob Wetterling was snatched by a masked gunman in Minnesota, his family still doesn’t know where he is or what happened to him. The Minneapolis Star Tribune says that the organization Patty and Jerry Wetterling created in their 11-year-old son’s name lives on to help raise awareness of the dangers facing children In an effort to increase its profile and heighten awareness of child safety issues, the Jacob Wetterling Foundation, based in St. Paul, is changing its name to the Jacob Wetterling Resource Center. The organization launched a new Web site (www.jwrc.org) that provides more online resources to help parents and teachers keep children safe.
Through the help of the Wetterlings and legislative changes across the land child abductions are less of a threat, said Nancy Sabin, the organization’s director. The popularity of the Internet and the heavy use of cell phones equipped with cameras has created a host of new problems, from online stalking and cyberbullying to child porn.
