A former Baltimore City Council member active in anticrime work was shot to death early Saturday morning in an armed robbery, the Baltimore Sun reports. Kenneth N. Harris Sr. “was very integral in city politics,” said Councilman Robert Curran, who called Harris “one of the up-and-comers.” Harris, 45, who lost a bid last year for council president, was shot outside a jazz club. The assailants robbed owner Keith Covington and other employees before fleeing from the rear of the club as Covington shot at them.
“This was senseless, just totally senseless,” said a local resident who had been at the club earlier Friday evening for happy hour. “It makes me nervous.” The club owner’s brother said that both men had been “quite vocal” about the condition of area surrounding the club. He called it “absolutely disgusting” that the neighborhoods surrounding a major university like Morgan State would be allowed to languish.
