St. Louis Mayor Francis Slay and Police Chief Joe Mokwa told the Board of Police Commissioners yesterday they may ask voters to approve a citywide sales tax to fund raises for the department, hire 100 or more new officers, and keep pensions healthy, reports the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

City police salaries lag significantly behind those offered by other large departments. Extra manpower is needed to boost the department’s current staffing of 1,280 officers, Mokwa said. The department is having trouble retaining employees because of the low pay, he said.
