Newsday reports that a New York police captain who had an affair with an officer under his command was convicted of assaulting the woman by a Manhattan state Supreme Court jury after only three hours of deliberations. The jury found Alberto Sanchez,42, a 15-year veteran of the department who was second in command at the city police academy, guilty of third-degree assault, a misdemeanor, but acquitted him of a second misdemeanor charge of unlawful imprisonment.
Sanchez had a consensual sexual affair with Officer Sharon Gandarilla, 33, an instructor and a nine-year veteran, Newsday reports. The conviction is the result of an incident that occurred nearly a year ago when Sanchez allegedly became angry at Gandarilla at a restaurant, dragged her to her car and beat her. In convicting Sanchez, the jury rejected the argument that Gandarilla had fabricated the allegations to support a sexual harassment lawsuit against the city.
