NYC To Start Gun-Law-Enforcement Ad Campaign

A new ad campaign will paper New York City with stark black-and-white warnings that packing an illegal weapon carries a big risk:a minimum of 3 and 1/2 years in prison, says the New York Daily News. “We’re going to make sure all New Yorkers understand this loud and clear,” said Mayor Michael Bloomberg. The attention-grabbing ads will be plastered on 1,000 phone kiosks and 50 minibillboards; 2,000 of them will be put up in subways and trains, and an additional 550 in restaurants, bars, and clubs.

“We intend to blanket the town with this message,” said Richard Aborn, president of the Citizens Crime Commission, which is coordinating the effort. The campaign would have cost about $10 million, but the design and ad spaces are being donated. The ads range from the boldly unsettling – “GUNS = PRISON” – to the darkly comic, including one meant for toilet stalls that says, “Get caught carrying an illegal gun and you’ll be locked in another small room.”
