Houston’s homicide total is not much different from last year’s: 119 by April’s end compared with 123 in 2006, says the Houston Chronicle. Eleven killings in March were related to gang activity. The city had 11 gang homicides during the entire first three months of 2006. “We seem to be having more gang-on-gang crime” said a police official.
In 2006, when Houston recorded 376 homicides, it was the city’s first major increase in homicides in years. The police department began an overtime program, putting more officers in patrol units, and homicides began to decrease last fall. Police believe heated arguments were the greatest factor in April slayings.
