If the jury that convicted Tyrone Williams yesterday of smuggling sentences him to death, he would be the first person condemned under a 1994 federal smuggling law, reports the Houston Chronicle. Since capital punishment was reinstated, Texas by far leads the nation in the number of men and women executed for capital crimes at the state court level. Two of the three men executed under federal law committed crimes in Texas.
Federal death row includes nine prisoners convicted in Texas – the most of any state, says the Washington-based Death Penalty Information Center. There are 41 people in federal custody with death sentences.
