Authorities in the Charlotte, N.C., area are cracking down on what they characterized as an organized but dangerous culture of street racing, reports the city’s Observer. Police said the racers travel at speeds exceeding 100 mph. They have made a dozen arrests and seized 19 cars in the past week.
“This isn’t just a bunch of high school kids,” said one Charlotte-Mecklenburg officer. “This is an organized group in their mid-20s, and there’s evidence of criminal activity, from drinking to stolen vehicle parts to weapons.” During several week of surveillance, police monitored elaborate races involving up to 100 drivers and 200 spectators, complete with lookouts posted to watch for police.
