The Violence Policy Center, which advocates some gun controls, says that the National Rifle Association has suffered its “biggest election disaster in nearly 15 years,” according to the NRA’s own election materials. The center says that in communications to members before yesterday’s elections, the NRA warned that its “pro-Second Amendment House of Representatives” was at stake. The NRA’s Political Victory Fund declared that “you and I could be headed for our biggest election disaster in nearly 15 years” if Democrats were to take control of one or both Houses of Congress.
Democrats won the House yesterday and could win the Senate, depending on the results in Montana and Virginia. However, any gun control laws passed by Congress would be subject to a veto by President Bush. Last week, NRA Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre told The New Gun Week that Democrats “want to unleash the ATF [Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives] on every law-abiding gunowner in America.”
