Six former or current Milwaukee police officers were charged yesterday in the beating of Frank Jude Jr. It is the most extensive prosecution of police in the city in 40 years, says the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. The charges bring to eight the number of officers now accused in the beating outside a drunken off-duty police party two years ago. Three have agreed to plead guilty.
U.S. Attorney Steven M. Biskupic, who launched a federal probe after Milwaukee County District Attorney E. Michael McCann was unable to win convictions against three officers in a trial in April, said the joint investigation continues. “When the feds said they would take over and had the support of Washington, D.C., to get to bottom of this, we knew this would happen,” said the attorney for one officer. “There is a lot of lying under oath that appears to have gone on.”
