TX Lawmakers Say Lax Regulators Imperil Kids in Day-Care Centers

Following the death of a four-year-old boy, Texas state legislators have blasted state day-care regulators for lapses in enforcement of state laws that endanger children in Texas child care centers, the Dallas Morning News reports. Sen. Jane Nelson, who leads the Texas Senate’s Health and Human Services Committee, said she was upset that the state protective services agency did not take responsibility for failing to notice problems at the center where the child died.

The News reported Sunday that state inspectors initially let the center’s owner operate the facility without a license, and since 2000 it listed as its director a man who did not work there. This year, three Dallas-area children have died in unsafe day-care conditions, and a fourth was raped.
