To CA Farmers, Hemp Legalization is no Pipe Dream

Legislation under consideration by California lawmakers would make the Golden State the first in the nation to legalize growing hemp for industrial uses, the New York Times reports. The measure would require farmers who grow it to undergo crop testing to ensure their variety of cannabis is nonhallucinogenic and its authors say it has been carefully worded to avoid conflicting with the federal Controlled Substances Act.

“Industrial hemp is a wholesome product,” said Charles Meyer, 65, a cotton farmer who hopes to raise the weed. “The fact we're not growing it is asinine,” Mr. Meyer said.
