A former school teacher admitted killing six-year old JonBenet Ramsey nearly 10 years ago during a kidnapping attempt, reports the Associated Press. John Mark Karr, 41, called the death an accident. Karr confessed after his arrest yesterday in Bangkok, Thailand, where he was living.
Lt. Gen. Suwat Tumrongsiskul, head of Thailand’s immigration police, quoted Karr as saying that Ramsey died during a kidnapping attempt that went awry. Karr reportedly once lived near the Ramsey family in Conyers, Ga. JonBenet was found beaten and strangled in the basement of the family’s home in Boulder, Co., on Dec. 26, 1996. A University of Colorado spokesman said journalism professor Michael Tracey had communicated with Karr over several months and contacted police. Tracey produced a documentary called “Who Killed JonBenet?” Later, Karr’s ex-wife, Lara, told a a California television station that she was with her former husband in Alabama at the time of JonBenet’s killing and she does not believe her former husband was involved.
