Chuck Weller, a Reno, Nv., domestic relations judge who was shot by a sniper two weeks ago, says courts need more security, the Reno Gazette-Journal reports. Weller, 53, made his first public appearance at the Reno-based National Judicial College. Darren Mack is charged with attempted murder; he also is charged with fatally stabbing his estranged wife, Charla, shortly before the shooting. Weller was presiding over the couple’s contentious divorce. Mack surrendered in Mexico last week.
Weller hopes to return to the bench soon. He looks forward to continued improvements in the family court system, calling it a difficult environment where people’s lives are changed. “It is a place of raw emotion,” he said. “It’s important to our democracy that the courts be able to operate in the absence of fear. “If this is the future of America, we need to provide more security to our judicial system so that it can operate.”
