Knee Leaving Austin Chief’s Job For Afghanistan

Austin, Tx., Police chief Stan Knee is resigning to become an adviser to Afghanistan’s interior minister, where he will work to help rebuild that country’s civilian law enforcement, reporrts the Austin American-Statesman. Assistant Chief Cathy Ellison, who was the department’s first African American female officer, will take over for Knee until a replacement is found.

Austin is the nation’s third-safest large city, according to FBI statistics. Knee’s legacy also includes several controversial police shootings and the memory of police employees typing “burn baby, burn” and similar messages to one another as a black-owned nightclub went up in flames. Knee arrived in Austin in 1997 after serving five years as chief in Garden Grove, Ca., which had a population of about 154,000. He inherited a department in disarray.
