New Orleans Fires 45 Officers; 228 Under Investigation

Forty-five officers and six civilians were fired from the New Orleans Police Department for abandonment and failing to report for duty during Hurricane Katrina, reports the New Orleans Times-Picayune. Another 15 officers resigned while under investigation; 228 others remain under investigation, said Acting Superintendent Warren Riley.

Fifteen officers are under investigation for looting. Riley has received 45 letters of resignation from officers citing “personal reasons,” ranging from relocation with family members to landing new jobs.
