Hurricane Katrina evacuees were sharing the same building as the Wayback House, a halfway house for convicted sex offenders and violent felons, reports the Dallas Morning News. “Of course it bothers me,” says evacuee Tamika Smith, 26, a mother of five who says she was told by officials about the presence of sex offenders.
The head of probation services in Dallas County said the sex offenders will be moved this week. About 800 offenders report to the center each month to see probation officers. On Saturday, the unit’s assistant supervisor was on hand, passing out photographs of 17 sex offender probationers living in the halfway house. Those probationers have been placed under lockdown until further notice. “We don’t want to leave any margin for error at all,” Steve Woodward said.
