Most New Yorkers give their police department good marks, though blacks and Hispanics are much less approving than whites, says the New York Daily News. Overall, 69 percent of respondents approve of police performance; 23 percent disapprove, says a Quinnipiac University Poll out today. Eighty-one percent of whites praise police, versus 53 percent of blacks and 65 percent of Hispanics.
Police Commissioner Ray Kelly had a 65 percent approval rating. Some 61 percent, said police brutality remains a “serious” problem. Blacks (84 percent) were more likely than whites or Hispanics to see brutality as a concern. New Yorkers believe the city safe” 81 percent called it “very safe” or “somewhat safe.”
