Political Times Are Good For 4-Million-Strong NRA

Times are good for the National Rifle Association, which begins its annual convention today in Houston, the Houston Chronicle reports. NRA CEO Wayne LaPierre has doubled membership to nearly 4 million during his 14-year reign. The NRA enjoys unprecedented political support in a Republican-controlled White House and Congress, and LaPierre says that Democrats are coming around: “It’s seen as bad politics to be on the wrong side of the Second Amendment.”

The Chronicle describes LaPierre as “a master of the type of rhetoric that spurs his group’s members to whip out their checkbooks and hurry to voting booths, accusing the United Nations, the ‘liberal media’ and the ‘anti-gunners’ of assaulting freedom.” If Congress does not give the weapons business immunity from most lawsuits, LaPierre says the U.S. gun industry cannot afford to stay in business. Then, Americans who want to buy firearms will be “at the mercy of the French and the Germans and the English.”
