A reveler who fired a rifle into the air New Year’s Eve was arrested after detectives linked his gunplay to a man’s death more than a mile away, the Orlando Sentinel reports. Richardo Roach, 24, was arrested for manslaughter with a firearm in the death of Henry McDaniel, 75, who lived 1 1/4 miles from his home. “It’s hard for him to accept that a bullet from his gun hit somebody,” said Cpl. Mike Ruggiero of the Orange County Sheriff’s Office. “He is a good person who did something without thinking it through.”
The 2,368-foot-per-second muzzle blast projected the bullet 2,200 yards away, striking McDaniel in the chest. How the case came together was a mix of coincidence and needle-in-the-haystack luck. Roach and a couple of friends were celebrating by firing pistols and 30-round clips from an SKS assault rifle. Roach told the officers “everyone does it” and “he did not know discharging a firearm” violated city ordinances.
