A Florida judge was removed from the criminal court bench after jailing 18 people who had been sent to the wrong courtrooms for arriving late for traffic-court hearings. One man was jailed three days for appearing 10 minutes late. The Orlando Sentinel says that Judge John Sloop of Sanford, Fl., conceded he didn’t grasp the situation quickly enough when the foul-up was brought to his attention Friday.
Sloop was the only one of 10 Seminole County judges to receive the lowest rating — “poor” — in the 2004 Central Florida Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers poll. Since becoming a judge in 1991, Sloop has gained a reputation as being hard-nosed, no-nonsense and quirky. He once tried to hold court outside under a tree.
