A Rockdale County, Ga., judge will require proof that defendants cannot speak English because some people are pretending not to be fluent just to delay criminal proceedings, says the Associated Press. Judge Sidney Nation told the Rockdale Citizen said the public defenders’ office has exceeded its $2,500 budget for interpreters.
A recent case involving Vietnamese defendants required four interpreters; Nation later found that three of them could speak English.
