Memphis Mayor Says Officers Gave Bad Impression

A dressing down of Memphis police by Mayor Willie Herenton has created a controversy, says the Memphis Commercial Appeal. Last Saturday night, Herenton said he saw four officers “horseplaying” during an traffic arrest. The driver was ticketed and the passenger arrested for drug possession.

Herenton watched the officers, and then told them, “Your behavior adds to the negative impression that many people have of police officers,” A television report of the encounter, which said the mayor used profanity with the officers, prompted Police Director James Bolden to issue a statement defending his officers.
