A Washington state woman and her three children died at the hands of the mother’s estranged boyfriend Wednesday in a particularly depraved murder-suicide. Genaro Garcia, 24, picked up the woman, Mona Allen, and their three children, ages 2 1/2, 18 months and six months, in his car late Tuesday night. The woman awoke from a nap to find Garcia pointing a pistol at her as he drove. He grabbed a gas can and splashed himself, Allen and the children, then flicked a lighter, reports the Seattle Times.

The car burst into flames, careened off the road and flipped over in a pasture. The children, trapped inside, died at the crash scene. Allen, her clothing afire, staggered from the wreckage. Garcia followed, also on fire, and began shooting at her as she screamed and ran across a field. Garcia fired until the gun jammed and he fell, according to police. He arrived dead at a Seattle hospital. Allen succumbed a few hours later. Before she died, she gave an agonizing account, saying, “He did this on purpose. He poured gas on me and my babies.”
