Three police officers were slain Thursday in Birmingham, Ala., after a confrontation at what neighbors and police called a drug house. What should have been a routine arrest on a misdemeanor assault warrant turned deadly at 1:18 p.m. when someone inside the apartment house sprayed officers with an SKS assault rifle. Two officers died in the apartment, just inside the back door. A third officer died just outside the front door when, after making a radio call for help, he was shot in the head. Two men, including the suspected shooter, were arrested two hours later after a search involving dozens of officers.
“This is something that seems unimaginable,” said Birmingham Police Chief Annetta Nunn. Police officials believe it is the first time more than one Birmingham police officer has been killed in a single incident. A police officer was last slain in Birmingham in November 2002.
