Miami Cop Begins Second “Thrown-Down-Gun” Trial

Is Miami SWAT officer Alejandro Macias a corrupt cop who lied about a fatal 1999 police shooting, or a calm marksman who killed a deranged landscaper with one pull of his machine-gun trigger? The Miami Herald says Macias, a 16-year veteran, is on trial for making false statements to homicide detectives the day after he shot and killed Jesse Runnels, 25, inside his girlfriend’s home. At issue is whether a toy gun found nearby was planted to justify Macias’ use of lethal force. “Alex Macias’ side is that the government has no case. Alex Macias’ side is that he didn’t do one darn thing wrong in this case,” his attorney told the jury.

This is Macias’ second throw-down gun trial in as many years. He was among the 13 officers indicted in 2001 in a mammoth gun-planting conspiracy that ended last year with two officers pleading guilty, four convicted at trial, four more receiving mistrials and three more — including Macias — acquitted.
