Illinois AG Targets Promoter of Police-Fire ‘Charity’ Boxing Event

Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan is scrutinizing a fight promoter accused of shortchanging the families of fallen Chicago police officers and firefighters, reports the Sun-Times.

Madigan filed a lawsuit Thursday claiming David Jimenez, 35, of Lansing, raised more than $34,000 in a May 31, 2003, boxing event dubbed “Battle of the Badges II” because police officers and firefighters participated as boxers.

But Jimenez gave only $1,500 to Gold Star Families, the charity for relatives of police officers killed in the line of duty, and $500 to the Gold Badge Society for families of fallen firefighters and paramedics, the lawsuit said.

“Instead of working to aid the most deserving of families, Jimenez exploited their cause and stole money intended for them,” Madigan said.
