After holding 11 people hostage for nine hours in a classroom at Dyersburg State Community College Wednesday, a 26-year-old Memphis man had agreed to release several of his captives, reports the Memphis Commercial Appeal.
But something went wrong as those hostages were leaving the building shortly before 10 p.m.
The gunman, Harold Kilpatrick, unexpectedly opened fire on the remaining hostages in a math classroom, prompting police team to storm the room and shoot Kilpatrick to death.
Two of the hostages were wounded in the siege at the small school 80 miles northeast of Memphis. The gunman’s motive was unclear.
