Court Jockeying Underway, but Rehnquist Stays On

Republican and Democratic senators are preparing for a summer battle over a Supreme Court nomination. Interest groups on the left and right are raising funds for a public relations fight over the court’s future. The news media are speculating that a justice might retire. And aides to President Bush, who would make such a nomination, are in touch with several lawyers who could be candidates for a court seat.

But USA Today says the justice who is the focus of most of the retirement talk–Chief Justice William Rehnquist, 78–seems in no hurry to exit the stage.
