Ohio Death Row Inmates File Retardation Claims

At least 18 Ohio death-row inmates have filed court appeals hoping to halt their executions on the grounds they are mentally retarded.

This week marked the six-month deadline set by the Ohio Supreme Court for death row inmates to make such claims in the wake of last year’s U.S. Supreme Court decision that executing the mentally retarded is unconstitutional.

The Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction maintains there are no mentally retarded inmates among the 204 men on death row.
