Without debate, a state commission investigating the deadly Rhode Island nightclub fire yesterday issued sweeping recommendations that would eliminate a controversial provision that exempted older buildings such as The Station from conforming to up-to-date fire safety laws requiring sprinklers.
Specialists say sprinklers would have quickly doused the Feb. 20 fire that killed 100 people and injured nearly 200 others in the crowded West Warwick roadhouse, built in the 1950s.
The recommendations, if approved by the Legislature, would give Rhode Island the most stringent fire safety laws in the country, supporters said.
