The Manchester Diocese will pay $6.5 million to settle lawsuits of 61 people who accused the church of looking the other way when they were being sexually abused as children by Catholic priests.
The settlement brings to 176 the number of sex-abuse cases settled in the past 11 months. The church said the total payout has reached $15.5 million.
The diocese says all but a handful of the sex-abuse cases are now resolved. Twenty-three priests were named as having harmed children in cases over the past 50 years. The diocese said all the priests have either been stripped of their authority or have died.
