Hurting for money, the San Francisco Department of Parking and Traffic wants to issue an extra 40,000 parking tickets in the next 45 days.
James Howard, the deputy enforcement chief who announced the new “goals” to his staff last week, said the bottom line is pretty simple: “We’re in tough economic times,” says the San Francisco Chronicle.
On June 1, meter overtime fines go up $10, to $35 or $40, depending on the location.
California law prohibits “any policy requiring any peace officer or parking enforcement employee to meet an arrest quota.” But Howard said the department isn’t talking about “quotas” — it’s setting “goals.” Said Howard: “I never said anything about a quota. “That’s just a misunderstanding some people had….(but) “we certainly have some goals and targets.”
