Violent hate crimes against Arab-Americans are on the rise, reports the Christian Science Monitor, from a shopkeeper killed in Brooklyn's Crown Heights neighborhood to a Pakistani beaten unconscious in a New Jersey parking lot "as his two attackers hurled insults to Islam." Others fear being deported on a technicality. "I'm afraid of giving out my number and having it put in someone's phone book," says Shaker Lashuel, a schoolteacher from Yemen who has lived in the U.S. for 16 years. "It's guilt by association."
