Concealing Fraud

After the Madoff affair and the Dutch construction fraud were exposed researcher Henk van de Bunt examined  the problem in a new article,” Walls of Secrecy and Silence: The Madoff Case and Cartels in the Construction Industry.” The report argues that the success of these massive fraud  lies in the successful concealment of illegal activities by the perpetrators and in the presence of silence in their social environment.

CA’s Juvenile Justice System Ill-Equipped to Care for Girls

California has been unable to meet the needs of  the rising number of girls in the juvenile justice detention system, found a new report, “Gender Responsiveness and Equity in California’s Juvenile Justice System.” Findings by researchers at the Berkeley Center for Criminal Justice include: gender-specific programs for girls were one of the least available program types, the nature of girls’ violence is more often relational and that girls are more often referred to court on prostitution charges than boys.

The New Politics of Judicial Elections

Judicial elections over the past decade have seen an explosion of  campaign donation, attack television ads and litigation about judicial elections found a new report from The Brennan Center for Justice at New York University School of Law. The report studies the elections nationwide from 2000-2009.

Tackling the Leviathan

Mass incarceration policies have taken a heavy toll on American families, neighborhoods and society.  In an essay for The Crime Report, in advance of publication of a major American Academy of Arts and Sciences project, Prof. Glenn Loury of Brown University, calls for a profound change.

Over the past four decades, the United States has, by any measure, become a vastly more punitive society. This expansion, and transformation, of  U.S. penal institutions—which has taken place at every level of government, and in all regions of the country―is without historical precedent or international parallel.

FBI DNA Backlog, Inspector General Says

A new report from the Office of the Inspector General finds that the FBI has a backlog of more than 3,200 forensic  DNA cases. These specific labs evaluate forensic DNA collected from crime scenes and victims.

Does financial loss lead to murder?

A new study study using data  from FBI’s Supplementary Homicide Reports from years 2000– 2007, explored the effect of financial loss on familial homicide.  In the report, “Social Structure and Family Homicides,” researchers found a strong link between economic deprivation and family homicide and  were stronger for intimate partner homicides and filicides.

Traffic Stops and Police Trust

Citizens that experienced one or more traffic stops in the past year were less likely to contact the police for assistance or to report a neighborhood problem, researchers found in a new study. Using Police—Public Contact Survey data, the report looked at race and demographics in their findings.

“To Walk the Earth in Safety”

The State Department released their annual report, “To Walk the Earth in Safety,” about its worldwide weapons eradication program in mine clearance and destruction assistance. Th U.S. works in 32 countries to destroy weapons, as well as implement programs to assist conflict survivors and inform area residents of potential risks from unexploded munitions.
