Expected Cuts In CA Inmate Rehab Could Cause Crime: DA

An effort to slash prison costs in California by laying off hundreds of workers who run rehabilitation programs could backfire, resulting in higher recidivism rates and ultimately higher prison costs, critics tell the San Francisco Chronicle. Over the next several months, officials will shave $250 million from rehabilitation spending and dismiss about 850 prison workers who run substance abuse and anger management programs, help inmates get high school diplomas, and teach offenders marketable skills such as plumbing, horticulture, and graphic arts. On October 30-31, 2009, journalists from across the country gathered at The Poynter Pavillion in St. Petersburg, Fla., for a reporting seminar co-sponsored by the Pew Center on the States and John Jay College of Justice’s Center on Media, Crime and Justice.

“The Future of Sentencing, Corrections and Crime Reduction in Florida” featured panelists including St. Petersburg mayor Rick Baker; David Utter, the Director of the Southern Poverty Law Center’s Florida Initiatives; and Tim Ryan, the Director of the Miami-Dade Corrections and Rehabilitation Department.

Appeals Court Cites Race In Allowing WA Prisoners To Vote

A federal appeals court has tossed out Washington state’s law banning incarcerated felons from voting, finding the state’s criminal-justice system is “infected” with racial discrimination, reports the Seattle Times. The 2-1 ruling by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit said the law violates the 1965 Voting Rights Act by disenfranchising minority voters. (more…)
