A Senate proposal aims to help police catch more criminals who flee across state lines. But will it work?

The criminal justice system’s persistent failure to aggressively pursue fugitives  wanted for crimes ranging from robbery to rape is a national  problem. Some believe the number eluding law enforcement authorities around the nation has now swelled into the hundreds of thousands.

FBI Suspends Parts Of Its Computer Overhaul; $30 Million Overrun

The Federal Bureau of Investigation has suspended work on parts of a huge computer overhaul, the latest costly setback in a decade-long effort to develop a modernized information system to combat crime and terrorism, the New York Times reports. The work was supposed to be completed this fall, but now will not be done until next year at the earliest. The delay could mean at least $30 million in cost overruns on a project considered vital to national security. (more…)

Blood Tests for Drunk Drivers. Why Not?

I read a story earlier this week about the Dallas police considering a new policy when it comes to DWI cases: blood tests in every case. Here’s the story.

So I guess show it works is: you get pulled over and the cop suspects you have been drinking.  He does the usual tests and if you fail, you are arrested.  He then asks if you would consent to a blood test, and if you refuse he goes in search of a warrant to draw blood.

Federal Agents Using False Online Profiles To Gather Evidence

Law enforcers are following the rest of the Internet world into social networking,  going undercover with false online profiles to communicate with suspects and gather information, reports the Associated Press. A Justice Department document that surfaced in a lawsuit shows that agents are logging on surreptitiously to exchange messages with suspects, identify a target’s friends or relatives, and browse information such as postings, personal photographs, and video clips.
