Where Not To Toke: Florida Issues Many More Pot Citations Than Other States

Florida still surpasses other states in a survey by MuckRock for marijuana possession charges, handing out tickets to one in 294 people in 2011. Arizona, the next largest distributor of marijuana citations per capita in the sample, issued one citation for every 3,313 people in 2011. The total number of citations from 2011 through 2014 in Arizona, California, Texas and Vermont combined is 49,160 – 336 fewer than the number of citations Florida accumulated through October 3 last year alone.

The number of citations in Florida from 2011 through 2014 is nearly five times that of the rest of the surveyed states combined, despite the fact that Florida’s population is approximately half of California’s. MuckRock said it tried but failed to get data from Washington, Colorado, and Massachusetts.
