An estimated one in 10 Americans (22.4 million) will use illicit drugs in any given month, according to a new study by the federal Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration.
Researchers for the study analyzed data from the 2013 National Survey on Drug Use and Health an annual survey of Americans more than 12 years old.
An estimated 24.6 million individuals aged 12 or older were illicit drug users in 2013.
About one in 12 Americans (20.3 million) dealt with a substance abuse disorder during 2013, according to the study.
The survey also examined mental health issues, finding one in five Americans (43.8 million) struggle with some form of mental illness, including depression. Researchers estimate that 7.7 million people struggle with both mental illness and substance abuse.
