Six people were killed late Sunday night in a collision that apparently happened during a high-speed police chase southeast of Houston, in League City, Texas. Two vehicles collided. The Galveston Daily News reported that two of the victims, young men in their 20s, were in an SUV that was being chased by police after an apparent traffic infraction. The other car was carrying a family of four who lived less than a block away from the crash site. (Police chases have been restricted in many cities and states in the past several years, based on mounting concerns about public safety and police liability.)
The League City chase began in nearby Dickinson. Dickinson Police Capt. Jay Jaekel said an officer tried to pull over a Dodge Durango after he saw the SUV swerving and running without headlights at about 8:20 p.m. The SUV tried to outrun police, moving at more than 100 mph during the chase, Jaekel said. “He was going so fast my guy couldn’t keep up,” Jaekel said. The officer didn’t see the crash.
