Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti has ordered two LAPD drones grounded until lawmakers can establish policies governing their use, reports CBSLA.com. Appearing Wednesday on a radio call-in show, he said, “I don't want to have UAVs (unmanned aerial vehicles) flying over the city looking at the general population, trying to find crime. That's creepy.”
Seattle police gave the two Draganflyer X6 drones to the LAPD after their use was vetoed by former Seattle Mayor Mike McGinn following angry public reaction to the devices. The small hexacopters are about three feet wide and can be outfitted with a range of sophisticated cameras, reports Motherboard. That website reported in March that Seattle police were having trouble giving away the drones, a year after the mayor ordered them boxed up.
