An unfortunate question
led me to an immense pain.
I said I was an adult
so that I could go to an adult prison.
I thought it would be fun
drugs, sex…
With time I understood
that it was a living hell.
It is such a cruel life
Being trapped like a mouse in a cage
Sleeping with three others in the tiny space below the bunk bed
on the floor that is wet night and day.
Being in a cell with 250 others
where there is not a single hallway to be alone
to get fresh air
to see the sun and the stars.
It is such a cruel life
Suffering when they turn off the water and the electricity
Living like an animal in the dark
disconnected from the world
without knowing the day nor the hour.
Seeing that they don't let in the visitors who come
Enduring hunger, cold, and
my mother's rejection
which hurts more than a bullet wound.
It is such a cruel life
Eating food mixed with starch solution
that doesn't even look like food
Smelling the nasty stink
of the bathrooms that are always overflowing
Suffering serious sicknesses
with only God as your doctor
Wanting to change, though they keep making up poor behavior reports
that the paper can stand but my heart can't.
Although those who work for the justice system have poured salt in our wounds, we are still capable of raising families without doing harm, just as our ancestors have done, although we have thrown away their advice.
Una Triste Duda Me Llevó a un Fuerte Dolor
Una triste duda
me llevó a un fuerte dolor.
Me hice pasar por adulto
para conocer cárcel de mayores
Pensé que iba a ver diversión
drogas, sexo…
