Critic: Media Need Three Sources On Facts, Shouldn’t Get Names Wrong

The shooting at LAX brought more news media errors, says CNN. NBC News had to correct its tweet and a report on CNBC that the gunman had been killed. He hadn’t. Another tweet claimed the AP and Reuters were reporting that former NSA Director Michael Hayden had been killed. They hadn’t made such a report. The Toronto “Globe and Mail” and other journalists on Twitter fell for that one.

Erik Wemple of the Washington Post says the worst sin in breaking crime news is misidentifying the criminal, as happened both in the Newtown Ct. school shooting and the Washington Navy Yard case. Says Wemple: “I want on the record official confirmation of anything involving a name. Short of that, three sources on [any fact]…and never, ever is it forgivable to screw up a name, never.”
