Anguished and apologetic, the only juror to show her face and openly discuss the acquittal of George Zimmerman said she is haunted by the idea that he “got away with murder” in the shooting of Trayvon Martin, reports the Miami Herald. The only minority in the all-female jury, the Puerto Rican woman, identified only as Maddy, told ABC that she struggled to balance the law with her feelings.
She said she followed the law and stands by her decision, but added that she feels she owes the parents of Martin, 17 when he was killed, an apology and understands their crusade. Zimmerman, a neighborhood watchman, was acquitted July 13 in the fatal shooting 17 months ago of Martin, 17, in a Sanford, Fla., townhouse complex. Maddy said she favored a murder conviction as deliberations began.
