Ariel Castro Charged in 977 Counts in Cleveland Kidnapping of Three Women

Suspected kidnapper and murderer Ariel Castro of Cleveland was indicted on hundreds of new criminal charges, but without Prosecutor Timothy McGinty calling for the death penalty, the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports. The 977-count indictment adds charges for crimes that prosecutors contend he committed against Amanda Berry, Gina DeJesus and Michelle Knight near the end of a decade-long imprisonment in his home.

The new indictment includes 512 counts of kidnapping, 446 counts of rape, seven counts of gross sexual imposition, six counts of felonious assault, three counts of child endangerment and one count of possessing criminal tools. It also includes two counts of aggravated murder stemming from claims that Castro, 52, beat and tortured one of the women into miscarrying a child.
