A second man was arrested Thursday in connection with a sexual assault at a 17,000-member Tulsa megachurch that was not reported to authorities for two weeks. Israel Shalom Castillo, 23, was charged with making lewd proposals to a child. The Tulsa World said the allegations stemmed from the assault of a 15-year-old girl at Victory Christian Center on Aug. 13 that was not reported until Aug. 30. Tulsa police say the girl is among at least three victims of alleged sex crimes by two former employees there.
A child crimes investigator says more victims could surface. Police said this week that the worldwide ministry's pastor and co-founder, Sharon Daugherty, whose daily broadcasts are beamed via satellite to more than 200 countries, knew about the abuse allegations but trusted ministry employees to follow in-house policies on reporting such incidents. Another former employee, Chris Denman, 20, is charged with first-degree rape of a minor, forcible oral sodomy of a minor, lewd molestation and use of a computer to facilitate a sex crime. Five Victory Christian Center staff members, including Daugherty’s son and daughter-in-law, were charged with failing to report child abuse in the case.
