Wild West Motown’: British Take on Detroit Vigilante Trend

The Daily Mail, a British tabloid, offers its take on an increase in self-defense killings in Detroit last year under the headline, “Wild West Motown.” The papers says, “Vigilante justice is rising in one of America’s most violent cities as residents of crime-ridden neighbourhoods take matters into their own hands.” The paper cited a 79 percent increase in self-defense killings in 2011, to a total of 34.

The paper reported that the rate of justifiable homicides is 2,200 percent above the US average, and it linked the increase in “vigilante justice” to police department cuts that forced citizens to “cop with alarmingly high response times.” It cited and average response time of 24 minutes, more than double the average of 10 minutes in comparable cities.
