WA Corrections Secretary Vail Quits Over Affair With Employee

Washington state corrections secretary Eldon Vail resigned suddenly Friday after learning that a video apparently documenting his affair with a subordinate might be made public, reports the Seattle Times. Vail, 59, heard about a shaky, handheld video that appears to show him and a woman leaving a motel near Olympia in separate cars. He acknowledged he did have an affair with an employee and that it was “inappropriate.”

The video was sent to several Seattle television stations late last week, apparently by an anonymous source, but no station aired it. The video was provided by people who identified themselves as corrections department employees. “His resignation is an absolute shock to the governor,” said Karina Shagren, spokeswoman for Gov. Christine Gregoire. Gregoire appointed Bernie Warner to take over as acting secretary.
